When we share our faith, we are simply seeking to share a piece of ourselves and learn and grow by engaging in conversation with others, as we seek to help them also discover more about themselves and about God.
1. Questions are the best way to get there. The most effective witnessing is about 80% listening and 20% sharing. Ask what they believe and why. Since God is at work in everyone’s heart they will hit on something true. Build on that. For example,
“Christians are just a bunch of hypocrites.”
“Yes, that is true. What do you think God should do with them?”
2. When it is time to share, visuals are always helpful. The story of Jesus is well conveyed by a bridge (this can be drawn on a napkin or in the sand or built with a baseball bat and two mitts – be creative). We are on one side and God on the other. We are separated by our lives which destroy ourselves and others through unlove. We can say we are sorry but we can’t fix the brokenness we cause. Jesus fixes it for us on the cross (this is the bridge) which enables us to connect to God, to change ourselves, and to truly heal the brokenness. We get the bridge by simply asking for it and then we want to continue to use the bridge to know and be changed by God.
3. Relax. Be patient and faithful. Trust that God is at work. You never have to “save” anyone. You just need to be 24/7 available for God. You will probably not be amazed by what you can do, you most certainly will be amazed by what He does.
4. Every Christian is unique and will share his or her faith in a unique way. Some like to present evidence for the historicity of the Christian faith. Others like to share their personal testimony. Still others like to invite people to come to a place where they can hear the Gospel. Others yet like to share their faith in practical ways by doing community service. Finally others share their faith through being involved in political issues and standing up for a just cause. Find your style and begin to express it.
